đ Matthew 16:1â12 RSV
16 And the Pharisees and Sadâ˛ducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them, âWhen it is evening, you say, âIt will be fair weather; for the sky is red.â 3 And in the morning, âIt will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.â You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah.â So he left them and departed.
5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, âTake heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadâ˛ducees.â 7 And they discussed it among themselves, saying, âWe brought no bread.â 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, âO men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to perceive that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadâ˛ducees.â 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadâ˛ducees.
đ Mark 8:11â26 NET
11Â Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for a sign from heaven to test him. 12Â Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, âWhy does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation.â 13Â Then he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.
14Â Now they had forgotten to take bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15Â And Jesus ordered them, âWatch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!â 16Â So they began to discuss with one another about having no bread. 17Â When he learned of this, Jesus said to them, âWhy are you arguing about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Have your hearts been hardened? 18Â Though you have eyes, donât you see? And though you have ears, canât you hear? Donât you remember? 19Â When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?â They replied, âTwelve.â 20Â âWhen I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many baskets full of pieces did you pick up?â They replied, âSeven.â 21Â Then he said to them, âDo you still not understand?â
22Â Then they came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to Jesus and asked him to touch him. 23Â He took the blind man by the hand and brought him outside of the village. Then he spit on his eyes, placed his hands on his eyes and asked, âDo you see anything?â 24Â Regaining his sight he said, âI see people, but they look like trees walking.â 25Â Then Jesus placed his hands on the manâs eyes again. And he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Â Jesus sent him home, saying, âDo not even go into the village.â
How does this reading plan work?
Through one year we will read through the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), The Desire of Ages, and Christ’s Object Lessons.
As you start on this reading plan I want to remind you that the purpose of doing this is not merely to read through the gospels and the other two books, it is not to merely learn facts but instead our main desire should be to know Jesus. Notice how we are to read:
âIt would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones.â Desire of Ages p83.4
The temptation will be to read through the pages quickly. Resist this urge. Read slowly, think about what each point means. Think from your perspective, those people who are mentioned, and of course that of Jesus.
Not that I need to tell you, but we must approach this with prayer. The same Holy Spirit who inspired the Bible writers is willing to guide us today, if we but ask for Him.
There is also a question each day that is there to encourage you to think deeply on the reading.
If you need accountability in your reading please feel free to contact us and we would be happy for you to join our reading group.
