Breaking Human Traditions
15Â Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said, 2Â âWhy do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they donât wash their hands when they eat.â 3Â He answered them, âAnd why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4Â For God said, âHonor your father and motherâ and âWhoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.â 5Â But you say, âIf someone tells his father or mother, âWhatever help you would have received from me is given to God,â 6Â he does not need to honor his father.â You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition. 7Â Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,
8Â âThis people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me,
9Â and they worship me in vain,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.ââ
True Defilement
10Â Then he called the crowd to him and said, âListen and understand. 11Â What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a person.â 12Â Then the disciples came to him and said, âDo you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?â 13Â And he replied, âEvery plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. 14Â Leave them! They are blind guides. If someone who is blind leads another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.â 15Â But Peter said to him, âExplain this parable to us.â 16Â Jesus said, âEven after all this, are you still so foolish? 17Â Donât you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer? 18Â But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. 19Â For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20Â These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person.â
đ Mark 7:1â23 AKJV
7Â Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. 2Â And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault. 3Â For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. 4Â And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. 5Â Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? 6Â He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7Â Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8Â For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
9Â And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10Â For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11Â But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12Â And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13Â making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
14Â And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: 15Â There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. 16Â If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 17Â And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. 18Â And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19Â because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? 20Â And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21Â For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22Â thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23Â all these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him.
How does this reading plan work?
Through one year we will read through the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), The Desire of Ages, and Christ’s Object Lessons.
As you start on this reading plan I want to remind you that the purpose of doing this is not merely to read through the gospels and the other two books, it is not to merely learn facts but instead our main desire should be to know Jesus. Notice how we are to read:
âIt would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones.â Desire of Ages p83.4
The temptation will be to read through the pages quickly. Resist this urge. Read slowly, think about what each point means. Think from your perspective, those people who are mentioned, and of course that of Jesus.
Not that I need to tell you, but we must approach this with prayer. The same Holy Spirit who inspired the Bible writers is willing to guide us today, if we but ask for Him.
There is also a question each day that is there to encourage you to think deeply on the reading.
If you need accountability in your reading please feel free to contact us and we would be happy for you to join our reading group.
